9 May / Victory Day

Today war veterans were our guests at school. They talked about the war and peace, our greatest holiday Victory Day with our students. Our class had a special guest too. We asked him lots of different questions. Olya Subocheva composed her poem in no time at all. Enjoy!

There are several monuments in our district. Here is one of them.
There used to be a village called Strogino where our district is now. During the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 the people of the village earned money and donated their jewellery to buy a tank. They sent it to the front to fight the fascists who had invaded our country.
There will be a lot of flowers at the monument in a few days when we celebrate one of our dearest holidays, Victory Day.

On Friday Class 5 students spoke about water with each other and with our guests from South Africa in Skype. We learnt a lot of interesting facts about water and thought of ways to save it. There are some posters and mini-projects on our board. Ann R created a presentation about World Water Day.
We also spoke about water with our guests Lin-lin from Taiwan, Mrs Hallows and Mr Sherman from South Africa.

Chinese inventions

Students learnt a lot about Chinese inventions in class, then they searched the Internet, visited the school library and looked up about them in encyclopedias.

On 19 March they spoke about Chinese inventions with Lin-lin, a teacher from Taiwan. She taught us how to make a paper fan.

Here are some photos from our Skype chat.

If

On Monday 17 March we were talking about if clauses in class. Polina, Vika and Alex told us their "If" story:

If we go to the Arctic, we’ll see a Polar bear.
If we see a Polar bear we will be scared.
If we are scared, we’ll run away.
If we run away, we will slip on the ice.
If we slip on the ice, we fall into the ocean.

If we fall into the ocean, we will swim to Russia.

Concert on 7 March

Lots of class 5 students go to art clubs and often perform at concerts. They also took part in the school concert for their mothers and teachers that was held at school on 7 March. Their performance was a great success.

Mystery Skype with South Africa

On the last day of the term Class 5V had a Mystery Skype session with a teacher from South Africa.
It was not easy to guess where Mr Steve Sherman is from. We used a hint and explored the world map and finally we found the place where the Atlantic and the Indian oceans meet. Luckily, there are not many cities on our map, so we found Cape Town easily.

Mr Sherman showed us some pictures of the city and told us about some of the sites. We learnt that there are three capitals of the South African Republic. Even Ms Black did not know it.
We saw the penguins on the beach too.
Mr Sherman showed us some tricks. We understood the first trick but the second one was difficult, so Mr Sherman explained us how our brain works.

He promised to talk to us again soon.

International Mother Language Day

On 21.02 Class 5 celebrated International Mother Language Day.
We did some activities using online translators. We chose a sentence and translated it into many languages. It was fun to listen to the sentences in the languages we do not know. Finally, we translated the sentence into Russian again.
Now we know that people speaking different languages can understand each other.

Olympic marathon

During the last day of the 2nd term there were lots of activities in Class 5. The student teacher Miss Valery prepared some very difficult questions for a quiz. It took a lot of effort but the students did not fail. They solved all the most difficult problems and were the winners!

Which is your favourite winter sport?

Biathlon in Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics And In My Life (Varia's story)

Varia D is from a sporty family. She has told us a very interesting story about her favourite sport and some famous athletes. She has also told us about popular sports in her family.
This is her story and her presentation below:

Biathlon is a sport which is equally accessible for men and for women. During competitions the biathlonists ski with a rifle and shoot at targets. They must be very hardy, concentrated, dedicated and self-disciplined. The sportsmen should be good runners and skiers and must also have a very good eyesight to be able to hit the targets. If a biathlonist misses a target while shooting, he has to run an extra circle as a penalty. Ski tracks may vary from 5 to 50 kilometers long, depending on the competition.
Biathlon is my favorite sport. I have been going for biathlon for four years already. I had not been aware of this sport when I started, but I enjoy it now very much. Our coach has been very kind and considerate to me. We live in a part of Moscow, which is very picturesque and has a lot of parks along the Moskva river. In winter time, these parks turn into a huge ski resort with lots of skiing tracks.
My father, an experiences skier, offered me to start training with him, and I agreed. My family is very sportive. My grandma carries a title of the “Master of Sports” (the highest rank in Soviet sports hierarchy) in figure skating. My parents used to ski very often when they were young. My younger sister, who is 8 years old now, practices ballet and she loves it more than anything in her life. However, three years ago she joined my biathlon kids&junior team. As a family of biathlon and ski fans, we wish the victory to all Russian sportsmen in our and their competitions.
While I was writing this blog, the 2014 Winter Olympic Games started in Sochi. I am supporting the Russia biathlon team very much, but luck is so far not on their side. Yesterday, our men’s team leader Anton Shipulin was very close to the third place, but he lost .7 of a second to a Czech sportsman. I felt so sorry for him! I cannot even imagine how desperate he was. The fourth place is most disappointing, when you are so close to an Olympic medal.
Ole Einer Bjorndalen won the gold medal in the men’s sprint biathlon competition. It would not be so amazing, if he was not forty years old and if he hit all the targets. He was the oldest of 87 competitors and he missed one target out of 10. But even though he had to run an extra penalty circle, he managed to catch up with the leaders and overrun them. In Sochi, Bjorndalen won his seventh golden Olympic medal! So I think it is fair to call him ‘’The King of Biathlon’’.
But you should not confuse his name with Bjorn Erlend Daehlie, who is forty six now, and he is not competing. A former 8 gold Olympic champion, he is a successful businessman now and sells sports clothes under his brand name ‘Bjorn’, which I am wearing during my sports exercises and competitions. I have already won several medals and prizes, as well as my younger sister and dad.

The first Russian Olympic champion in figure skating / Matvei M's story

Nikolai Panin won the gold medal in special figures in the 1908 Summer Olympics. Panin was Russia's first Olympic champion.
The so-called special figures event was an Olympic sport at the IV Summer Olympic Games in London. 1908 was the only year in which special figures was an Olympic event. As it was required then, Nikolai Panin sent the drawings of the figures he was going to trace on the ice to the judges before the games. The figures were so complex that many referees did not believe it was possible to trace them. But the seven-time world champion Swede Salchow believed it, but refused to do them. So Nikolai Panin became an Olympic champion.

Figure skating / Ksyusha P's story

Figure skating

I like sport. My favourite sport is figure skating.
When I was four years old, my parents and I went to the skating rink. It was the first time I saw figure skaters. I loved the sport and I wanted to be a figure skater.
My parents and I went to the sport shop and bought new skates. I began to go to the figure skating club. First it was difficult. I fell again and again. One day Irina Slutskaya visited our club and she showed us some jumps and then she told her story about the Olympic Games. I understood it  is difficult to become a champion. You have to work hard and spend a lot of time on the skating rink. So I decided to skate for pleasure because my education is more important for me.
Now I go to the skating rink three times a week. I like figure skating because I enjoy ice and speed. Thanks for sport I feel healthy and strong.

Thank you very much!!!
